National Hospice and Palliative Care Month: The People Behind the Care

Every November, National Hospice and Palliative Care Month recognizes the people who care for patients and families facing serious illness. For Reserve Care, it’s a chance to celebrate our dedicated staff and volunteers and the important work they do throughout Northern Ohio.

Hospice and palliative care help people manage symptoms, maintain comfort and make decisions about their care. While palliative care can begin at any stage of a serious illness, hospice focuses on quality of life when treatment is no longer intended to cure the illness. Both depend on a team of professionals who bring different skills and expertise to each patient’s care.

Meet the Hospice Care Team

No two patients have the same needs. Our interdisciplinary teams work together to develop care plans that reflect each person’s wishes and priorities.

Physicians and Medical Directors oversee medical care, manage complex symptoms and help guide treatment decisions.

Nurses manage pain and symptoms, coordinate care and help families understand what to expect as their loved one’s condition changes.

Hospice Aides assist with bathing, grooming and other personal needs, helping patients remain comfortable while supporting family caregivers.

Social Workers provide emotional support, help families navigate difficult decisions and connect them with helpful resources.

Spiritual Care Coordinators offer support based on each person’s beliefs, values and preferences, whether religious or not.

Grief Support Professionals help individuals and families navigate loss through counseling, support groups and other resources.

Volunteers offer companionship, spend time with patients and provide caregivers with opportunities to rest.

Why Teamwork Matters

A patient’s needs can change quickly, and families often have questions that extend beyond medical care. A nurse may help relieve pain while a social worker addresses a family’s concerns. A hospice aide can assist with daily care, and a volunteer might spend an afternoon visiting with a patient. Each role contributes something different, giving patients and families access to the support they need.

Celebrating Our Teams

Across Northern Ohio, Reserve Care staff and volunteers care for patients in private homes, care facilities and our hospice centers. Their work requires clinical expertise, patience and compassion. It also means taking time to listen, respecting personal wishes and helping families through decisions they never expected to face.

This National Hospice and Palliative Care Month, we thank our teams for the care they provide and the trust they build with patients and families every day.
